Deep orange

It seems obscene the amount of one-time-use merchandise that is being stocked on the shelves these days. Just go to the ubiquitous deep orange section of the store. T-shirts, doormats, lamps, mugs… All for a two-second gag. Or even a two-minute gag, if you invest in an elaborate construction of skeletons and shrieking pirates and cages enveloped in cobwebs, to hang on the trees in your yard. It’s as if America Perfect gets one day out of the year to bring death and decay out of the closet, one day you’re allowed to be scared. You can act scared as long as we know it’s just fun and entertainment, and all will be back to normal tomorrow.

But there is a beauty to the season. The year has reached maturity. This Indian corn is my Halloween. This is beauty.
