In honor of Earth day :) This car runs 50 miles to a gallon of used cooking oil. Oil just filtered manually, given away by restaurants at no cost. The car needs a separate tank.
A small hassle in exchange for independence from oil imports and having to pay for gas.
I wish they'd said how they got their car adapted and how much it cost.
Gas prices in Portland, OR:
Today 3.544
Yesterday 3.540
One Week Ago 3.461
One Month Ago 3.387
One Year Ago 3.079
When I first came to the US, 3 years and 4 months ago, the price of gas was around $1.80 per gallon. Every day is considered a "record high" now for the price of a barrel of oil, so that has gotten old, and a phrase with more impact will soon have to be invented.
In the EU, the price of gas has been hovering around € 1.00 to € 1.30 per liter since I left - an increase of around 30% in 3 years as opposed to nearly 100% in the US. However, converted to American measurement system, it still means they have been paying around US$6.9 per gallon (in today's dollars) this whole time, and perhaps not feeling as much panic as this country is experiencing.
Pressure propels resourcefulness. Veggie car: a small-scale solution, but an idea worth spreading.
